Mastiff - Extra Large - Adult - Male - Dog - STITCH IN TENNESSE
Description
Stitch is a gorgeous male brindle Mastiff of about five years in age. If dogs could talk he would have quite a story to tell. Hopefully this is the beginning of a new and final chapter in Stitch's life where all will be wonderful from now on! Stitch belonged to a family who did not take good care of him - they used to let him run loose in their neighborhood etc...and he could have been hit by a car at any time. A caring neighbor who felt very sorry for Stitch talked them into giving him to them so that they could work with rescue to find a wonderful forever home for this very deserving and wonderful Mastiff. Stitch is both leash trained and housebroken. He loves children and people of all ages. He is a real 'leaner' though and craves affection and as such could easily knock small children down accidentally. He certainly does not mean any harm but he does not know how big he really is. He also loves other dogs both large and small. The family who is fostering him does not have cats and neither do the neighbors so we don't know what his reaction would be to them. Although his former owners used to let him run loose in the neighborhood and they never heard of any problems with other animals. He has never been aggressive to anyone.. He is about 5 years old. UPDATE PARAPHRASED FROM STITCH'S TEMPORARY FOSTER MOM JULY 21,2009 Over the years we have lived next door to Stitch and knew that he was alternately allowed to run loose, tied to a tree with no shelter available (and continually tangled up), confined to a kennel type area only large enough for him to turn around or confined in a dark windowless garage. Sometimes he was kept in the house but his owners began to travel a great deal because of their jobs and someone was supposed to stop by to feed him. During those times of absence we could see that he was not being fed or checked on every day and he was confined most of the time. Eventually when he was outside we would make sure he was taken care of.. When we began to devote ourselves to him and as he was allowed to run loose he quickly became loyal, laying on our front porch waiting for someone to come out and pet him or to greet us as we came home. He even got to the point he would not go home with his owner. He just wanted to wait at the door for love and attention. He even prefers being with people to playing with toys. Eventually we started keeping Stitch in our back yard with full access to our garage where he sleeps and his owner agreed to let us find another place for Stitch to live. We would love to keep him but we cannot have an indoor dog due to our circumstances and he deserves to be a pampered house dog. As a result of his outside neglect Stitch is VERY afraid of thunderstorms and fireworks. When he is alone during a thunderstorm (and we have been deluged with storms this summer) or fireworks he gets very agitated and persistently licks on his left rear leg, creating a sore place. He has scar tissue on this leg (about 5 in. long) as a result of this habit he developed of licking that leg. When he is inside during these storms and firework type of noise, he does not do this chewing at all and is very calm. Because storms and even neighborhood fireworks are unpredictable he needs to be an indoor dog. The vet says he is otherwise a big healthy boy with no medical issues. Stitch is absolutely a gentle giant who wants nothing but to be with people. His manners are excellent, he is not a dog who will lick you or damage your house. He is smart and understands basic commands such as sit, shake and back (up).. He is leash trained and loves to ride in our van. He loves other dogs and cries for them to be able to come into our fenced yard to play.. He adores our older beagle and follows her around the yard like a love sick puppy when she is in the yard, even though she has no interest in him. Stitch needs a family who can allow him to be indoors and has a lot of love to give. He will return that love tenfold. He is super affectionate and loveable. Now that he's at our house people stop by just to ask how he's doing. They all know him from his days of running loose. . If you have the time and love in your heart to make me a family member for ever please fill out an adoption application at www.sosmastiffrescue.org mentioning me by name and state.
